Anonymous asked: When/how did you decide you wanted to go into bio? Did your teacher show you the internship because you wanted to go into bio or just because you were a good student?
I never really had the interest to go into Bio before my IB class. Here was my application:
“At first, when considering my future careers, I thought of psychology because I wanted to help people on a personal level. I have realized that this is not for me though, because it does not fulfill my desire to research, continuously express my curiosity and break strides in current material. It does provide the individual character growth that I need, as an educationally growing person.
During, and outside of school, I have realized the impacts of the expectations of society on the careers that ‘should’ be occupied by women. I hear peers and adults alike speaking about the future, looking into jobs that are dependent on the compassionate emotional capacity usually associated with women. Professions such as teachers, flight attendants, nurses etc., are the primary ones that are looked at and while I have no opposition to them, I want something more for myself. At school I thrive on discovering things in Biology and solving equations in Trigonometry/Pre-Calculus, simply because I get excited about solving problems. Girls my age usually snub these two subjects because they do not apply to the ideas they have in mind for their future, or because they are too difficult or hard. I do not want to fit that mold; I want to veer away from it and be even more extraordinary by challenging myself and society to provide the opportunities to break these confinements. When I first realized this shift in mindset, I was unsure of what I wanted to pursue for my future.
I know that I am interested in science, because it can be related to life in many aspects. Outdoors, I simply love to sit in nature and enjoy it while wondering about how life works and what more I can learn and do based on new knowledge things. However, as previously stated, I want to help people. Therefore, I have considered a more Biomedical field, because that can directly work with people as patients. However, I also am considering extending my knowledge in the fields of Molecular Biology, Biotechnology or any other newly researched topics, because I am interested in the developments and outcomes of using such advancements. I may not be able to discover, as of yet, anything new, but I can and will utilize information that I learn and retain it to prepare myself on my bright path towards a science driven career…it dawned on me that I was a strong student and had always succeeded in my science classes. I looked into the application and I was enraptured. I still am. The possibilities of this amazing internship are endless; experience for college, personal growth and development, along with hands-on training, hard and challenging everyday work.”
Anonymous asked: But what made you stand out that they picked you? What made you special
I guess my application was written really well. That and maybe my teachers made me look really good haha.
Anonymous asked: thats cool. how do you get that interning? do you have great grades in biology or something?
Last year my Biology teacher offered me the application; I’ve gotten Straight A’s all through Bio, and high school, so I feel like it’s a strong subject for me. So I got it! I was super surprised last year, and I ended up getting full ride to COSMOS so I couldn’t do it, thus my postponement to this summer.
orodd asked: Cristina, why are you so damn cool??
